Web Office Review

Working online is getting easier every day. The proliferation of web applications available at little or no cost is staggering. Today I'm reviewing the three most popular online office suites available to the SMB (small to midsized business) market. These are Google Apps, ThinkFree Online and Zoho Business. After trying all three, I came away both amazed and a little disappointed.

Google Docs reviewLet's start with Google Apps. It's the most simplistic of the three. The suite consists of the main office apps - word processor, presentation and spreadsheets. The best part of the program is, not surprisingly, the search function. It contains advanced options as well as saved searches. Also included is intergration with Gmail and Google Calendar. As for the main applications, they are functional but not up to business standards. I would be more inclined to use Google Apps for personal use.

ThinkFree Online reviewThinkFree Online has the most attractive and tightly integrated interface. It contains the three basic apps plus a note application that's still in beta. The note software looks interesting. It comes with templates for numerous types of notes - fax, lecture, letter, memo, recipe, etc. Another nice feature is the ability to add maps from Yahoo and video from YouTube. The three main apps have many more features than Google but not as many as Microsoft Office. The compatibility with MS office is better with ThinkFree than the other choices, although Zoho is gaining. For most users, the breath of these programs will be quite sufficient. The ability to create a Workspace to set up collaborative projects (3 free) is a very useful feature. The email notification and granular access permissions add to the functionality.

Zoho is taking an unusual approach to building its suite. It first developed a slew of disparate applications and is only now beginning to integrate them into the Zoho Business suite. The application list is exhausting;

  • word processor
  • presentation
  • spreadsheet
  • calendar
  • notesZoho Business review
  • invoices
  • contacts
  • wiki
  • planner
  • chat
  • email
  • CRM
  • database
  • conferencing
  • application builder

The most distinguishing feature for me is the Zoho Creator. With it you can create web forms from scratch or from templates. Creating a web form containing drop-down menus and check box selections is a breeze. No coding background is needed, although it wouldn't hurt. Although you can access all the apps from the desktop interface, true integration has a long ways to go.  The scope of this project is huge and so is the upside if they can pull it off.

Let's wrap this up with a table containing the major points of each office suite;

Web Office Suites

 Usefullness
Feature Set
Compatibility
Conclusions
Google

basic functionality make it suitable for personal use only

just the minimum with little integration  OK expected more from Google
 ThinkFree

well integrates suite that contains the basic business programs

few apps, but they have most of the features a business will use
best solid though sparse business suite
 Zoho

well on the way to being a "one size fits all" business office suite

seemingly unlimited apps with adequate features, integration is ongoing
OK disjointed and a bit buggy, but development continuing at an amazing pace

Website Design

Is your website looking old?

Here are some things you should consider before deciding on a website design. Is the site for commercial or informational purposes? Who is my audience, always keep this in mind. Should the website be flash-y interactive with dynamic content or subdued and businesslike. Do I need to track my visitors, always a good idea and it's usually free.

Ethernetworks Client Reviews Our satisfied customers speak

Eric Fucci of Fucci & Friedman Inc; "We came in Monday morning and had no access to the internet. We called Ethernetworks and Len was here within the hour. Turned out there was a problem with the router. He reconfigured and secured the router and we were back up and selling insurance by lunchtime! It's important we have someone to call when there's an emergency. Good job!" Read more reviews.

Google Chrome Shines

I took my first look at Googles new browser today. Chrome uses a minimalist approach, combining features where possible. One example of this is the address bar which doubles as the search box. Chromes opens to a page of visual links to your most visited sites, a nice feature.
