Network Services - Firewall Appliances

Network FirewallNetwork Firewall SecurityFor most small to mid sized businesses, the layered approach to security is usually best. This can mean;

Access control (i.e. permissions) can be done on all of the above devices. Anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-spam is usually done on the firewall appliance, internet facing servers and on the client computers.

A firewall appliance sits between your network and the internet. It can perform any or all of the following services;

Inexpensive units, usually under $100, can be purchased from Linksys, D-Link and Netgear. These units are aimed at the home/home office users, in other words, easy setup and limited features. More expensive hardware can be found at Sonic Wall, Watchguard and Fortinet. These units can range from $1000 to a few thousand, depending on the features required. Ethernetworks can help you decide which best fits your business and what services you need to run for optimum security. If you don't have the qualified personnel or the time to spare, we'll pick up the right unit, install and configure it for you. Should you desire a fully customized firewall, we'll build one to suit your specific needs using IPtables/Linux, Snort and other open source tools. The hardware requirement for this type of application is your standard X86 PC with sufficient RAM. In other words, if you have an extra PC laying around not being used, you're in business.

Le Tip Weekly Showcase

Le Tip Mt Sinai Member of the Week

Each week I highlight another member of my Mt Sinai Le Tip chapter. This week's showcase is for Dennis Coburn.Dennis Coburn-Graphic Artist Dennis is the Graphic Artist of group. He does original watercolors, home portraits, prints and many other graphic projects and has been doing so for his entire adult life.  My favorite work of his is a poster he did for a New York Tugboat organization. When I was young, my father worked on one of the city tugs that hauled skows up and down the East River and would occasionally bring me onboard for the 2 day trip. I instantly recognized the Moran and McAllister boats that frequented the Harbor back in the day.

You can contact Dennis at 631-821-7264 or by email at dcoburn5@optonline.net. You can find out more about Dennis and view some of his work by clicking on the following link; Dennis Coburn link

Google Chrome Shines

I took my first look at Googles new browser today. Chrome uses a minimalist approach, combining features where possible. One example of this is the address bar which doubles as the search box. Chromes opens to a page of visual links to your most visited sites, a nice feature.

It's similar to Fast Dial, one of my favorite Firefox addons.
